Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez have a lot in common: They’re both former child stars who sing and act, and they both received Golden Globe nominations this year in the category of best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture. That’s why the Wicked and Emilia Pérez stars are so happy for each other’s success.

At the Academy Women’s Luncheon in LA on Dec. 10, Ari asked to be seated next to Selena, telling Variety, “I don’t know Selena as well as I wish I did so I’m excited to sit next to her today.” But she evidently knows her well enough to have her number. Selena told Variety that Ari was one of the first people to reach out and congratulate her when the nominations were announced on Dec. 9.

“Ariana texted me and it was the sweetest note and it was about six in the morning,” said Selena. “We sent each other voice messages. It was very exciting.”

“I respect her so much, and I’ve always adored her,” Ariana said of Selena. “I was really happy for her to see us on that list together. It was very special.”

“I really love watching this moment happen for Selena,” Ariana added. “I know how hard she’s worked and how long she’s waited. I recognize that because it resonates with me so I know that feeling. So when you can reach out to your friends in the industry and say, ‘Great work, congratulations,’ why not do it?”
