Will Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez earn Oscar nominations? Will Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez earn Oscar nominations?
The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards are being announced Thursday morning, and there’s a possibility that both Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez will receive their first-ever nominations.
The two stars have been nominated for multiple other awards, including Golden Globes, for their roles in Wicked and Emilia Pérez, respectively. If they are nominated, the two former child stars will likely be competing against each other in the best supporting actress category.
However, don’t expect to see Selena performing during the Oscar ceremony if the song she performs in the film, “Mi Camino,” gets nominated. The Motion Picture Academy announced Wednesday that this year’s telecast will “move away from live performances” in the best original song category and will instead “be focused on the songwriters.”
The Academy adds, “We will celebrate their artistry through personal reflections from the teams who bring these songs to life. All of this, and more, will uncover the stories and inspiration behind this year’s nominees.”
In the best original song category, the songwriters, not the performers, receive the Oscars. And since Selena didn’t write the song, she won’t be speaking about it.
As for Ariana, none of the songs in Wicked are eligible for Oscar nominations, but that doesn’t mean she won’t perform on the telecast at all. The Academy promises “powerful musical moments” during the show, and after all, Wicked was a huge hit.
Both Wicked and Emilia Pérez are expected to land multiple nominations Thursday morning, with the awards website GoldDerby.com speculating that in particular, Emilia Pérez — a Spanish-language film about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes gender-reaffirming surgery — would break the record for the most Oscar nods ever. The current record is 10, held jointly by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma.
